Security, Development Challenges: UN, European Union Team Evaluates In Far North

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Central Africa, François Louncény Fall, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to West Africa and Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas and the Special Representative of the European Union to Sahel, Angel Losada Fernandez are back in Yaounde after a two-day working visit to the Far North Region of Cameroon. Their sojourn in the Far North Region was part of their working and assessment mission to the four countries of the Lake Chad Basin that are involved in the war against the terrorist sect Boko Haram.

After the their findings, the team members briefed the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Joseph Dion Ngute during discussions in Yaounde on April 25, 2019. After the discussions, François Louncény Fall told the press that the international community is out to accompany the efforts of the Cameroon government to ensure the stabilisation of the war-stricken region that also faces the problems of the drying up of Lake Chad, climate change and the education of the youths.

The international community is out to help in the development of the countries of the Lake Chad Basin zone in general. He disclosed that the international community has already raised 2 billion Euros in development assistance to be handed to the four countries concerned to tackle humanitarian issues and education of the youths.
