Mining Sector: New Code Adopted

The bill initiated on instructions of the President of the Republic was yesterday adopted in the National Assembly.

 

In a bid to optimise resources generated from the mining sector for the economic development of the country, the government is set to put order in the mining sector. The bill on the Mining Code tabled in the National Assembly was yesterday December 1, 2016 adopted during a plenary sitting chaired by House Speaker, Hon. Cavaye Yeguié Djibril.

The bill initiated by government on instructions of the President of the Republic seeks to strengthen and improve the legal framework of mining activities in the country. The new legal framework, explanatory notes of the bill indicate, is the result of the in-depth review of the existing mining legislation. Though the existing legislation adopted in 2001 and 2010 stimulated interest in the subsoil resources, through the issuance of mineral exploration permits and the signing of many mining agreements, the sector has continued to be characterised by numerous dysfunctions, preventing the State from benefitting adequately considering the huge national mineral potential.
