Order Is Needed

A few months ago, Burkina Faso was considered one of the leading African countries in terms of democracy. After the chasing of long term ruler Blaise Compaore by the population and the re-election of Roch Marc Kabore in a well acclaimed election, many thought the woes of the country were over. But hardly did they imagine that the relative peace being enjoyed was to be shattered on January, 23, 2022 following a bloodless coup d’état that brought Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba to power. Since then, things have not been the same again as the country is now on the spotlight.
After Moussa Faki Mahamat, who chairs the AU’s Commission, condemned and suspended the country from “all AU activities until the effective restoration of constitutional order in the country,” the country is now in more hot waters. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc has also joined the band wagon by suspending Burkina Faso from its ranks and warned of possible sanctions. This decision is an indication that the continental organization is out for more serious business this time around after being criticized for its imbalance and selective attitude with regards to the handling of crisis in the continent.
