Cameroon’s boxing family is in a festive mood following an unprecedented performance at the just-ended 19th African Boxing Championship in Brazzaville, Congo at the weekend. In fact, for the first time, the team bagged home nine medals comprising six gold, two silver and one bronze to stand tallest among the 25 competing nations. Great performance indeed!
By virtue of their sublime show, the country will line up five boxers in the upcoming World Boxing Championship in Germany. Much will be expected from them then. As the athletes and officials obviously fête their exploits, which is legitimate anyway, they shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that getting to the summit is great but staying there is even more challenging. Remaining Africa’s number one in boxing is a daunting challenge the actors must bear in mind and strive to surmount. All must thus be put in place to consolidate the achievements.
This would, no doubt, require more than just beating the chests that “Cameroon is Cameroon” or that “Impossible n’est pas Camerounais.” The exploits of the athletes in Brazzaville, one would imagine, were fruits of hard work, discipline and above all team spirit.
All these virtues that propelled the country to the pinnacle of African boxing must, as a matter of fact, be upheld and imperatively enhanced not only to stay top but through which more glory could be brought to the fatherland. Officials have said it severally that there is neither a major nor minor sport in the country. Once love for fatherland is displayed and fair-play given a chance, the country’s flag flies higher. This should be the duty of every athlete.
